Packing for your vacation means making a lot of decisions about what you can and can not live without for the length of your trip. Do you need 3 different pairs of heels? Should you pack your rain coat? What about the book series you are in the middle of? While it is hard to say what you will need for each different vacation, here are a few things that you will rarely need to pack.

The Hair Dryer

Most, if not all, hotels and resorts offer a hair dryer for guest use. It may not be the one you are used to, but using it will free up valuable real estate in your suitcase. Unless you use them daily, without fail, leave the curling iron and flat iron behind too.

Shampoo, Conditioner, Body Wash & Shaving Cream

Most of these products are also provided in hotel rooms, and often in vacation homes as well. If you have a shampoo, conditioner or body wash that you absolutely must have with you, look for travel size bottles or purchase small travel bottles and fill them yourself. Soap or conditioner make a great substitute for shaving cream, saving you more space in your bags.

Perfume and Nail Polish

Since many people have sensitivities to scents, it is best to leave your perfume behind if you are going to be traveling on airplanes or visiting highly populated areas. If you must have it, spray some strips of construction paper with your perfume and put it in a Ziploc bag. Get a manicure and pedicure before leaving on your vacation, so there is no need for nail polish.

Your Entire Makeup Bag

Grab a small Ziploc bag and fill it with the makeup that you use on a daily basis. Leave the rest behind. Do make sure that your travel make-up includes a facial moisturizer with SPF!

An Outfit for Every Day

Pack some pieces that can be easily mixed and matched with other pieces, ensuring you have some different outfits available to you without packing something new for each day. Stick to the basics with shoes as well, a pair of sandals, a pair of heels and some hiking shoes should work for all situations.

It is understood that many avid readers prefer paper to technology, but one e-reader weighs less than one book, and it can carry the entire series that you are currently enjoying. Switch back to the paper version once you are home.

Taking these items out of your luggage can free up the space of an entire carry on bag! That means you have more room for souvenirs and duty free items, and that is priceless.
