Over the last few years I have slowly been stroking items off of my bucket list and this month I was able to strike out another item: riding in a hot air balloon. While visiting Albuquerque, Griffin and I had the incredible opportunity to fly with Rainbow Ryders early one morning.

We first watched the team set up our balloon and listened to instructions on how we would board and exit the basket.

The crew that prepared our balloon made sure that we all had a photo on our own phones or cameras before we took off. Our travel group was in one half of the basket and we were all excited to take off! A wooden box was placed in the basket that helped our nine year old traveler see over the side of the basket, and the two younger children were able to watch out of the step holes on the side of the basket. Holding children up was not permitted during flight, for obvious reasons.

It was amazing to see other balloons in the sky while we were on our flight. The view of the Sandia Mountains was beautiful.

In this photo you can see the Rio Grande.

We had a distant view of the Albuquerque Volcanoes which are a set of extinct volcanoes. We also took a low flying ride over some of Albuquerque’s petroglyphs, which are historic Native American and Hispanic images carved in rock.

I think our hot air balloon was the prettiest one in the sky, but for obvious reasons I couldn’t get a good picture of it. I managed this shot while looking straight up and you can see how pretty it was.

The experience was not at all what I expected. It was relaxing and calm. Our landing was very smooth too. It is a great way to see the sights!
